4/1 April is already starting out to be a busy month. We finished March with a total of 42 calls, and on April 1st we added 3 more. In the morning, Rescue 2-6 was dispatched to Oak Leaf Manor on Harrisburg Pike to assist Hempfield Fire Department on a reported fire. We were a replacement unit for Rescue 7-6, but the assignment was downgraded right after dispatch and we were held in quarters. Just after lunch, the Rescue ran a vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer on Mount Joy Road in Rapho Township. The crew assisted EMS and spent just over half an hour in service. While returning from that accident, the Rescue was dispatched to another in Penn Township, on Fruitville Pike. The crew spent another 40 minutes on scene and finally returned home. 4/2 At just past 10:30, Truck 2-6 was dispatched to assist Lititz fire department at the Kissel Hill Health Center on Peters Road. They were dispatched for an automatic fire alarm and arrived to find a smoke condition inside, upgrading the assignment. The truck arrived and took a staging point at the entrance to the facility, standing by until the source was found. Unfortunately, several members of our daytime staff were in the middle of teaching a fire prevention class and had to leave to respond to the call. Our apologies for the quick exit, but it just shows that emergencies can happen at any time and our volunteers must always be ready. Our total time in service was approximately 1 hour. |
4/13 Sunday Afternoon Lts. Hammer and Gantz took engine 2-6-2 over to the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center for some weekend training. There are several members who can't attend our regular Monday night training sessions, so this was intended so that they can still train with us. This was also an opportunity for the junior firefighters to get some extra training based exclusively on what they are allowed to do. There were 8 total members who participated in a 4 hour review of engine company operations. Thanks to all that attended, especially the juniors who did a great job in their 1st time in the maze. |

4/14 Monday night crews were again at the Training Center, this time to use the burn building with Lititz Fire Department. While there, the company was dispatched for a vehicle accident with possible entrapment on Mount Joy Road. Engine 2-6-1 responded with a crew from station, while Rescue 2-6, Squad 2-6, and Chief 2-6 (Reif) responded from the training center. Crews worked to remove the roof and doors of 1 vehicle. Total time in service was 2 hours. |
4/19 Today we ran a total of 3 calls, starting with a minor accident on Main Street at Market Square in the borough. Later we assisted Lititz Fire Department during a working house fire, 1st with a tanker assist for water and then an engine transfer to cover their station while they were there. Members spent a total of 3 1/2 hours in service. |
4/20 Another busy morning, starting with an accident on Weaver Road. Reported to be a vehicle that struck a pole, Chief 2-6-2 (Olesen) arrived to find the vehicle on fire. Members notified PP&L for the pole and stood by until the State Police arrived. Later in the day, Engine 2-6-1 transferred to Columbia Susquehanna station 8-4 due to a working hotel fire in Wrightsville Borough, York county. Members stood by for 3 1/2 hours until 8-4 returned home. Thank you to Susquehanna 8-4 for the breakfast, it was much appreciated. |
4/21 Today started off early with an assist to Mt. Gretna for a working house fire. Rescue 2-6 responded with 6 personnel and spent 1 hour in service. Later in the afternoon, we were dispatched for an accident on Lancaster Road at Bucknoll Road, with Rescue 2-6 performing some clean up of fluids. Just after returning to station, we were dispatched for a child locked in a vehicle on South Linden Street. This marks 8 calls over the last 3 days, making a busy week so far for the volunteers. Then that night the topic for the weekly training was vehicle rescue. Thank you to Kreiser's Garage for providing 2 vehicles for us to practice on. |

4/24 Another 3 call day for the volunteers. Starting early just after midnight, Truck 2-6 and Rescue 2-6 were dispatched to assist Lititz Fire Department on a 2nd alarm fire in a set of row homes on East Front Street. A total of 10 members responded and spent 3 1/2 hours in service. Later that evening, the station was dispatched for an investigation for a smoke alarm going off with no signs of fire in a residence. That was followed with a fire alarm for Stiegel Elementary, with nothing found. This brings our recent activity to 13 calls in the last 6 days. |
