Thanks to a huge community turnout, the Hook & Ladder Festival was a great success. It
was a chance for the citizens of Manheim and surrounding areas to see what the fire service
is all about. There was ample opportunity for adults and children to see our equipment, play
some games, and most of all, eat some delicious chicken corn soup provided by our Booster
Association. After a long day, Gene Sando of Lebanon was the last ticket drawn for the 2008
Dodge Ram pickup. Thank you to everyone who attended, hopefully you learned something
new about our operations. We greatly appreciate all the donations we received throughout
the day. Also a big thank you to all the people and organizations who provided their time and
supplies to ensure the day was a hit.
Manheim Borough Sewer System Smoke Testing
Starting Monday August 18th, the borough will be conducting smoke testing of the sewer
system. This is to locate storm water sources that may be connected to the sewer system.
White smoke will be inserted into the sewer system to show any connections such as catch
basins, roof drains, area drains, broken sewer pipes, and open pipe joints that may be
connected to the system. During the testing, you may see white smoke emitting from
manhole covers on the street and vent pipes located on homes or businesses. The goal of
this test is to reduce costs in the sewer and to minimize flooding.

Smoke could enter your home if you have a dry trap. This may be a basement floor drain or
some other unused plumbing fixture. Pouring water down these drains or other seldom used
fixtures will help assure that smoke does not enter your residence. A plumbing defect may
also allow smoke to enter, and residents may want to address this defect to prevent any
sewer odors from entering the residence in the future.

In the unlikely event that smoke enters your building, do not be alarmed. Open windows and
doors to ventilate the building and contact the people outside doing the testing. You will be
able to recognize them by their bright red vans and brown uniforms. They will try to assist
you in locating the source of the smoke.

If you have any doubts that the smoke is from the testing, if the smoke is a color other than
white, or if you have an odor of something burning, please do not hesitate to call 911.

After a mid-August slow down, the end of the month is rapidly raising our call totals. In the
past week we ran a total of 14 calls, with 4 of them coming just today. On Monday the 25,
the members who attended training were able to practice drafting water from a pond with
Engine 2-6-1. One member was able to get pump practice toward his engine driver's
qualification, and another was able to complete his rescue driver qualification. Two members
also spent the weekend at LCPSTC working on their Fire Instructor I/II certification. Thank
you to all the members who continue to train and sharpen their skills in order to better serve
the community. Also, thank you to the Geib family for letting us use your pond, it is greatly
appreciated.

The numbers continue to climb at the end of August, with 17 calls in the last 10 days. Late
on the 28th, the volunteers were dispatched for a dwelling fire on North Grant Street. Deputy
2-6 (Rhodes) arrived to find a working fire on a 2nd floor porch to the rear of the building.
Engine 2-6-2 laid a supply line from a hydrant and had the fire knocked down within minutes,
then made a quick primary search for any victims. Truck 2-6 later arrived and conducted a
secondary search of the residence. Mutual aid assisted from Mastersonville, Lititz, and Penryn
fire departments. An engine from Mount Joy also stood by in our station until we returned.
Units were in service approximately 2 1/2 hours.

With August finishing up as one of our busiest months, September has already started off
with a bang. On the 2nd, the vounteers handled 4 calls for service including 2 fire alarms, a
reported fire in an apartment building, and a motorcycle accident. That makes 22 calls over
the last 10 days. With summer winding to a close, please remember to be safe with any
controlled burns. Dry conditions can spread even a small fire very quickly. Also watch for
motorcyclists taking advantage of the remaining nice weather. There have been several
serious accidents around the county involving motorcycles. One of the biggest causes is
people not seeing them on the road and pulling out in front of them. Please use caution and
don't allow yourself to be distracted while driving.

We are expected to receive some severe rain starting in the coming weekend as the
remnants of a busy hurricane season begin to reach us. This is a good time to check your
safety plans at home. Make sure your smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries.
Check your flashlight batteries and be sure to have adequate food and water for you and
yout pets to get through the weekend. If you have a sump pump, test it to make sure it is
working to prevent water accumulation in your basement. Keep an eye on the weather
forecasts so that you know what to expect. You can get current weather data for our area
from the National Weather Service website or the local news. And please remember, NEVER
DRIVE THROUGH HIGH WATER. Rest assured, even in severe weather, we will be here if you
need us.
