ENVIRONMENTAL RESCUE & WOODS FIRE

Jan 6th, 2009 - Shortly after 10:30, Rescue 2-6, Ambulance 2-6-1 and Medic 12 were dispatched for an Environmental Rescue on Hossler Road in Rapho Township. LCWC was reporting a male that had been struck by a tree and was pinned beneath it. Chief 2-6-2 (Ober) arrived with Ambulance 2-6-1 to find that the patient was not actually pinned by the tree, but was confined under branches and injured. Upon arrival of our crews, we cut away the confining branches and assisted EMS with stabilizing the patient and carrying him to the ambulance. Units were in service for just over 20 minutes. Responding units: Rescue 2-6, Squad 2-6 and Duty Vehicle.

Just after arriving back at the station, the Tanker was alerted to assist Mastersonville Fire Company at a two acre woods fire on Lehman Road in Rapho Township. Command 2-12 was contacted and advised of our crew status and we were given permission to respond with the engine as well. Upon arrival, our crews pulled a trash line to extinguish hot spots on the far side of the main incident and made sure there was no more extension. Crews operated on the scene for approximately 30 minutes.

TAKING PRIDE!

Dec 29th - Every Monday night, our crews gather at 7PM for our weekly training session. Each week, our crews practice their skills in order to sharpen their abilities and knowledge to better serve the Manheim community. However, one night per year, specifically in the winter months, our volunteers take time to wax the apparatus. We do this not only to protect the rigs from the elements of the winter driving, but to also preserve our investment in our vehicles. These vehicles cost anywhere from $250,000 to nearly $1 million now. Our apparatus replacement plan is on a 20-year cycle, so we do everything possible to make sure that these rigs not only last that long mechanically, but also cosmetically. We take great pride in our rigs and we hope that it shows to our community that we value the support you provide us so that we may purchase these rigs.

BARN FIRE IN RAPHO TOWNSHIP

Dec 28th - At approximately 15:00, Station 2-6 was alerted along with Mastersonville Fire Co, Fire Dept. Mt. Joy, Penryn Fire Co. and Hempfield Fire Co. for a barn fire in Rapho Township. Chief 2-6 (Olesen) arrived to find a working fire in a barn with exposures to the nearby farm house. Engine 2-6-2 arrived and immediately went to work to protect the house and contain the fire to the barn. Engine 2-12-1 and Tanker 2-12 assisted with fire suppression. Truck 7-5 set up for master stream operations and the crew from Truck 2-6 assisted the crew from Engine 2-6-2. Additional units from Mount Joy, Rheems, East Petersburg, Penryn and West Hempfield assisted at the scene as well, which was upgraded to a second alarm. Crews from Brunnerville and Lititz Fire Companies stood by at our station while we operated on scene for approx. 4 1/2 hours. Cause of the fire was a result of a heat lamp used to keep dogs warm. The barn was used to house a dog kennel. Thirteen dogs were saved prior to the arrival of the fire department, however, 7 puppies perished in the fire. The approximate value of fire damage was $105,000. The barn was a complete loss, however, the house was saved by the firefighters, with only minor heat damage.

Units operating on scene: Engines 2-6-2, 2-12-1, 2-12-2, 7-5-1, 7-5-2, 7-19-1 and 2-8-2; Trucks 2-6, 7-5 and 2-3; Rescues 2-6 and 7-6; Tankers 2-6, 2-12, 2-8, 7-19 and 7-11; and Ambulance 2-6-1. Chief 2-6 (Olesen) had Command 2-6. Engine 2-5-1 and Tanker 2-2 stood by at Station 2-6.

CARDS FOR HANNAH

Dec 18th -4 members from our fire department participated in a card caravan for Hannah Garman of Lititz. She is a 5 year old girl who has been diagnosed with a rare and incurable brain tumor. Her wish for Christmas gifts was to see how many cards she could receive. An effort was started by Deputy Chief Glenn Usdin of Lancaster Twp. Fire Company to see how well the emergency services could do to help grant her this wish. Well over 100 fire trucks, ambulances and police cars traveled to Lititz to show support for Hannah. Over 5,000 cards were delivered to her that evening and word quickly spread throughout the county of her wish and by the end of December the total card count was over 123,000 cards!

The members of the Manheim Fire Department are proud to have been a part of this event and we wish Hannah peace and comfort in 2009. Stay strong and keep smiling!

Nov 30th - At 07:20 Rescue 2-6, Ambulance 2-6-1 and Medic 12 were dispatched for a vehicle accident.  While units went responding reported that the vehicle was to be overturned into a ditch with one person still trapped inside.  Rescue 2-6 arrived and confirmed one vehicle overturned with one person still inside.  Chief 2-6 arrived and assumed command and requested that an Engine from Station 2-12 (Mastersonville Fire Company) be dispatched.  Rescue crew stabilized the vehicle and performed the extrication. Engine 2-12-1 arrived and assisted with spill control and extrication.

LENDING A HELPING HAND

Nov 26th - On Wednesday, four members of the fire department met with the Manheim Central High School Girls Basketball Team to assist with a photo shoot. They asked for our assistance so they can create a poster and program cover with a photo of the girls on the aerial of our ladder truck. The final theme will be known soon and a copy of main photo will be posted here shortly. Good Luck to the Lady Barons from the members of the Manheim Fire Department!!

HANDS-ON TRAINING

Nov 9th & 10th - On Sunday, we had the opportunity to do some hands-on training at an acquired structure in our fire district. A house was being demolished to make way for the building of storage garages on Doe Run Road in Penn Township. Despite last minute arrangements, our crews were able to make the most of our time we had at the house. Both days provided us the opportunity to practice vertical ventilation cuts, interior operations such as hose line advancements, opening up of windows and walls and searches for victims. Although we were not able to burn the house for live training, we did manage to get a lot of work and experience for our members. A special thanks to Rodney Lockard from Investment Real Estate and Penn Township Manager David Kratzer for working with Assistant Chief Ober in coordinating the use of the property.
