Silo Fire in 1st Due

On Wednesday, August 24th @ 1338 Manheim Fire Department was dispatched for a Silo Fire @ 604 Old Line Rd. in Rapho Twp. Engine 26-1 with Lt. 3 (Kirchner) as OIC arrived on location to find smoke showing from a 70’ Silo along with a small amount of fire from a small utility shed attached to the Silo. Tower 26 arrived with Lt. 1 (Ault) as OIC and positioned to be able to access top of Silo with bucket.  Chief 2-12 arrived and assumed the 26 command. Deputy 26 arrived and assisted Chief 2-12 with command. Engine 26-1 pulled (2) 1 ¾ handlines along with setting  up a supply line to the tower. Rescue 23 and Engine 2-12-1 arrived on scene and assisted the crews of Engine 26-1 and Tower 26. Tanker 28 arrived on scene and was set up to supply Engine 26-1. Engine. Engine 75-1 had the RIT assignment. Tower 26 crew was able to use Rotary saw to cut open top of Fill Chute on side of silo to gain access. At this time, it was found that the fire was contained to the fill chute along with the small shed at base of Silo. Tower 26 used a handline to soak down inside of chute through the opening they cut in the metal roof. At this time, it was decided to use a cellar nozzle from  Station 2-3 and run a 1 ¾ line from the top the whole way down the chute to soak down all the wooden doors into the main Silo. Units operated on scene until 1542.

Engine 26-1, Truck 26, Engine 2-12-1, Engine 75-1, Rescue 23, Rescue 79-1, Tanker 28, Tanker 76, Squad 28, Ambulance 26-1, Ambulance 25-1. Tanker 22 was on stand-by @ Sta. 26.
